The Khumbu Icefall
is a perilous section of the summit route riddled with
deadly crevices and unstable boulders of ice.
At approximately 6:35 am on April 18th, 2014 an ice avalanche occurred
near the top of the Icefall where several Sherpa
were climbing to prepare camps for the climbing season.
After an extensive search and rescue effort, officials determined
the avalanche claimed the lives of 16 Sherpa.
